Project: District-Wide Accessibility Compliance & Site Management
Role: Website Specialist
Overview:
As the sole point of contact and owner of the Oakland Schools website, I was responsible for ensuring all district sites were fully accessible, compliant, and user-friendly. I managed all web operations through a ticketing system, performing audits, content updates, and direct remediation while serving a large internal audience of educators and administrators.
What I Did:
- Solely managed website updates, accessibility audits, and compliance remediation across multiple sites
- Conducted thorough WCAG and ADA audits using WAVE, Lighthouse, and screen reader testing
- Implemented fixes for alt text, headings, contrast, and link clarity (e.g., replacing “click here” links with descriptive text)
- Created staff training and documentation to support long-term compliance
- Led cross-departmental collaboration to integrate compliant captioning services for digital content
Impact:
- Maintained ADA and WCAG compliance throughout tenure with zero OCR complaints
- Improved SEO and UX across district pages, contributing to a 30% increase in organic search traffic
- Built a sustainable, accessible site experience used daily by families, students, and staff
- Managed Oakland Schools' Google Business Profile, improving its public rating from 1.0 to 3.5 stars by updating information, responding to feedback, and ensuring accurate, accessible listings
